Four Olathe golfers will vie for the 98th Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship when the Kansas Golf Association’s signature event is played July 14 to 20 at Wichita Country Club.

All four qualified for the 98th edition of the state’s oldest golf championship during the last week in qualifying rounds rounds across the state.

On June 23, Olathe resident Brian Lawson shot a 73 and placed fourth at Mission Hills Country Club.

He was joined in the tournament field four days later when Olathe resident David Rhodes tied for second Friday by shooting 70 at Salina Country Club.

Finally, on Monday in the Amateur’s final qualifier, Olathe East graduate Brad Boan shot 71 and tied for fourth at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence.

Boan, who will be a senior for the Wichita State University golf team, finished two strokes in front of Chase Chamberlin, a 2008 Olathe South graduate.

Chamberlin tied for 12th, which easily put him among the 30 qualifiers at the tourney.

From all five sites combined, 97 golfers qualified for the Amateur.

Olathe resident Brent Dewitz narrowly missed joining the field.

He fired a 78 at Eagle Bend, which left him tied for 39th and three shots from a berth in the 98th Kansas Amateur.

Olathe golfers fare well at Public Links

A couple of Olathe residents cracked the top 10 Saturday and Sunday at the Kansas Golf Association’s 14th Annual Public Links Championship, which was played at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence.

Cameron Bishop won the championship, firing a 36-hole total of 136.

Four strokes back, and all alone in sixth, was 2007 Olathe South graduate Jordan Smith.

Smith, a Wichita State University golfer who won the 2007 Class 6A state title and helped the Falcons do the same, opened with a 72 and followed that with a 68.

Jon Platz, a Lawrence native who has relocated to Olathe, opened with a 72 and shot 69 on Sunday.

His two-day total put Platz all alone in seventh.

It also left him as the top finisher in the 30- to 44-year-old age group.

Gary Roles, who co-owns Olathe T-Short & Trophy, tied for 23rd. He shot consecutive 73s.
